Sooner or later, many growing companies run into the same question: our products sell well at home, we would also like to win orders from overseas, so should one website serve both audiences? Plenty of owners assume that simply putting Chinese and English on the same site is enough. Only once the work begins do they discover how many complications come with it. It is a problem almost every company with export ambitions has to face.
Whichever side the server sits on, the other side slows down
A website opens quickly when the server is close to the visitor. Hosted in China, domestic customers get a smooth experience while overseas visitors often wait a long time; hosted abroad, the situation simply flips and domestic customers find the site slow, or even unreachable. When a company tries to please both sides at once, it usually pleases neither. Visitors who close the page before it finishes loading rarely come back, and that loss is invisible.
Machine translation cannot carry a professional image
To save effort, some companies run their Chinese pages straight through a translation tool. The words may look roughly right, yet overseas readers find the phrasing awkward and the terminology often inaccurate. A website is the face customers see first. Stilted wording and odd expressions easily make overseas buyers doubt how professional the company really is, and orders drift away while they hesitate, usually without any explanation.
Filing and promotion: the rules are not the same on both sides
A website aimed at domestic customers normally has to complete the required filing before it can be used properly, and only then can it be promoted through Baidu. The overseas side involves different communication habits and different paperwork expectations. When companies work it out on their own, the usual outcome is materials rejected again and again and advertising accounts that stay offline far too long, missing the selling season altogether. Mixing both languages into the same pages also makes it harder for search engines to tell who the site is really serving, which can affect indexing and rankings.
It looks like a saving, but maintenance costs more
Two languages mean two sets of content, and every update has to be done twice. It is all too easy for the English pages to fall out of step with the Chinese ones, and customers who see outdated information lose trust immediately. Add server security, data backups and the risk of attacks, and the company still has to assign extra people to keep watch. In the end it is rarely cheaper than doing the job properly the first time.
